Concept Art:- Character Designs
When it comes to tackling character designs. I always start the research with primary resources i can get hold of. So on this circumstance i wanted to get hold of live cockcroaches. Lucky enough my cousin, the wierd person that he is happen to own some as "pets".I was able to begin observing & sketching the structure to the basic shape outline of the creature, which gave myself a good start to some how place my own design to the character.
Here's a couple of life drawn sketches,focusing mostly on shape,form & structure.
A couple of basic sketches exploring different character designs, all with gesture poses, line of action & a start to looking at facial expression.
A main intention was to always keep the design simple, simple, simple taking on the "less is more" approach.
This was due to a past mistake made on a recent project involving really complicated & detailed designs by me,which had a huge affect to the project to continuously draw them in the full detail that they were.
For these selection of drawings i incorporated the use of different polygons, but this time using alot of curves, circles to add more personality to the character.
More sketches of character designs, Larry the Cockroach, experimenting with different types of media:- pencil, biro pen, fine-liner etc.
The one shaded all in tonal blue, was initially going to be the final design to Larry, but however we came to terms that the design became heavily complicated with difficult polygons to model. So it will mean that i'll head back to the drawing board to re-configure the shape & just simplify the design using maybe more cylinders and cubes etc...i'll see where i can take 'old Larry' !!!!
